..:: Trademark Registration ::..

1 :: General Information

Here are some information about the TM registration system in Syria for your reference:

  • The Law No. 8/2007 (Law of Distinctive Marks, Geographical Indications and Industrial Drawings and Designs) regulates the registration, renewal and maintenance of trademarks in Syria.
  • The application system in Syria is Single Class system.
  • Syria is a member of the Paris Convention.
  • Syria adopts the Nice Classification 10th Edition.
  • Time Frame for registration: 8 – 10 Months (Smooth Registration).
  • TM Registration Period: 10 Years from the Filing Date.
  • Use is required for maintaining the registration within 3 years from the Registration Date.

2 :: Trademark Registration Procedures

Trademark registration process passes through 3 main stages in Syria as the following:

Stage 1 :: Filing Stage

Time Frame: 3 – 4 Months

Application filed > Formalities Examination (6 Months from the Filing Date for late filing or original documents i.e. Original POA) > Substantive Examination where the application will be examined on the basis of relative and absolute grounds.

Stage 2 :: Publication Stage

Time Frame: 90 Days

If Examination was OK > Application will be accepted > It will be published in the Official Gazette for 90 Days. Any interested 3rd Party can oppose the application within this period.

Stage 3 :: Registration Stage

Time Frame: 1 – 2 Weeks

If the publication period ended up without any oppositions filed against the application, then the trademark will be registered for 10 Years from the Filing Date

3 :: Required Documents

  1. Power Of Attorney. Legalized from the Syrian Embassy.
    Late Filing is possible within 6 Months from the Date of Filing. Subject to Delay Fines.
    The procedure of getting the Security Approval and Super-Legalizing the Power of Attorney in Syria takes (1 – 2 Months); therefore, you should send it ASAP.
  2. Applicant’s Name and Address as mentioned in the POA.
  3. TM Sample (Clear Image File) and the TM description of the trade/service mark and its meaning.
  4. List of Goods/Services (In English). [Nice Classification 10th Edition]
  5. Priority Document. Certified [Singed and Sealed] from the Home TM Office.

2 :: Trademark Renewal Procedures

There is a Grace Period of 6 Months as from the Registration Expiry Date to apply for renewal of a TM and it is subject to Delay Fines

Trademark renewal process passes through 3 main stages in Syria as the following:

Application filed > Formalities Examination (6 Months from the Filing Date for late filing or original documents i.e. Original POA).

Stage 2 :: Publication Stage

Time Frame: 90 Days

Note: Please Note that as from the year 2017, TM renewal applications will not be published for opposition; that is there will be no publication fees for renewal anymore.

Stage 3 :: Final Renewal Stage

Time Frame: 1 – 2 Weeks

If the publication period ended up without any oppositions filed against the renewal application, then the trademark will be renewed for 10 Years.

3 :: Required Documents

..:: TM Owner Change of Name & Address ::..

1 :: General Information

Here are some information about the TM records changes in Syria for your reference:

  • The record change process takes [3 – 4 Months].
  • Registration of Change of Name/Address should be filed within 3 months from the Change Date; After that there will be delay fines.
  • Registration of Change of Name/Address cannot be filed without the original documents.

2 :: Required Documents

  1. Power Of Attorney. Legalized from the Syrian Embassy.
  2. Change of Name/Address Document (Certficate) Legalized from the Syrian Embassy.
  3. Simple Copy of the TM Registration Certificate.

..:: Trademark Assignment ::..

1 :: General Information

Here are some information about the Trademark Assignment in Syria for your reference:

  • TM Assignment process takes [3 – 4 Months].
  • Assignment should be filed within 3 months from the Change Date, after that there will be delay fines.
  • Assignment cannot be filed without the original documents.
  • Assignment can be applied for all or some of the Goods/Services of a registered TM.
  • Assignment will not take effect against the public or 3rd parties unless it is published or registered (recorded).
  • Assignment can be registered (recorded) against a pending mark before the publication only.

2 :: Required Documents

  1. Power Of Attorney. Legalized from the Syrian Embassy.
  2. Assignment Deed (Certficate) Legalized from the Syrian Embassy.
  3. Simple Copy of the TM Registration Certificate.
